Collection of artifacts of John P. Davis to be acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)
The John P. Davis Collection Blog
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will acquire the collection of artifacts documenting the life and work of activist intellectual and civil rights lawyer John P. Davis. Davis became prominent for his work with the Joint Committee on National Recovery and the founding of the National Negro Congress in 1935. He went on to found Our World magazine in 1946, a full-size, nationally-distributed magazine edited for African American readers. He also published the American Negro Reference Book covering virtually every aspect of African-American life, present and past. We will keep you posted with current events and backstage progressions as we finalize the collection. Our blog promises to be tales of inspiration, dignity and family captured during our collaboration as we prepare to hand-off the collection to the Smithsonian. Tell us your history, share a family photograph, and connect with others by contributing to the museum’s Memory Book.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reminds us that "The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service." Which reminds us there is a difference between charity and true authentic service and what motivates us to do good and the intent behind the actions we choose to take in the name of charity and service.
