President Barak Obama

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God"

I, too, sing America

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967)

Count Down to Obama Inauguration - January 20, 2009

On the eve of THE inauguration I find myself from moment to moment filled with a myriad of emotions. Most of you do not know that I was at THE march on Washington when Dr.King made what was to become one of the most famous speeches. We hear and rightly so, that King's dream is on the way of being fulfilled in the inauguration of Barack Obama tomorrow January, 20, 2009. That alone is reason enough for us to be filled with emotion. I also remember back to names like Medgar Evers, Emmet Till, John Lewis, The Little Rock nine, and Rosa Parks. Famous as they are I know that there are others whose names we may never know that have played a quiet part in the dream of this day. I reflect back on those family members who are not here to glory in this day and I am humbled to know that Barack Obama rides on the shoulders of both my father, John p. Davis, and my brother, Michael D. Davis; that they are part of a hundred other quiet and little known stories of soldiers for the cause. As we march across this wonderful bridge of change and hope, I pray, as the gentleman said on TV this morning, "that it is a bridge we never have to cross back over again." This is truly "THE day that the LORD has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it!" God bless us all. Margy Davis January 19, 2009

Barak Obama - The 44th President of the United States Thank you, Daddy Dear, for the opportunity my name is Chris Wylie, son of Bob Wylie and Margy Davis. John P. Davis was my grandfather. I called him Daddy Dear. Growing up, I heard the stories told about the publisher-writer-civil rights leader who helped make America a better place for all its people. I just knew him as the funny man who pretended he was going to sit on me if I sat in his chair. I remember the man who let me stay up late if he was babysitting. I remember that he loved me. I am thinking about my Daddy Dear today because this morning I cast a vote for Barack Obama. I wonder if my grandfather knew that his grandson would have the opportunity to vote for a black man for President. I wonder if he dreamed of that black man being favored to win. I hope that everyone of us who are familiar with John P. Davis will take a moment to recognize that our chance to vote for Senator Obama is due, in large measure, to the work John Davis did so many years ago. I was too young to know what he did for me while he lived. But now, on an historic election day, I want to proudly say: I voted. I voted for Barack Obama. Thank you, Daddy Dear, for the opportunity. Chris Wylie November 4, 2008

Cousin Chris, I am glad to hear from you. When I voted this morning, I thought of grand father too and I had tears in my eyes. Your ode to grand dad has been posted I love you cousin Michelle DeMond Davis November 4, 2008

I am over the top about the outcome...thinking about all those in our family who have passed away..of whom would have been so proud to have lived to see this day!!!!! I praise God that He has allowed me to see this day!!!!!! Love. Margy Davis November 4, 2008

I am humbled by Barack Obama's win; so grateful for a father and mother who taught me about my history and heritage. This is indeed a new day that has been paved by men and women who stood in the gap; men and women who struggled against impossible odds to make this world a better place for us all-.I celebrate the fact that mommy and daddy were a vital part of the struggle and I remember my brother Michael who carried on the fight for equality!."This is the day that the LORD has made let us rejoice and be glad in it!"- Miriam Nason November 5, 2008
