The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will acquire the collection of artifacts documenting the life and work of activist intellectual and civil rights lawyer John P. Davis. Davis became prominent for his work with the Joint Committee on National Recovery and the founding of the National Negro Congress in 1935. He went on to found Our World magazine in 1946, a full-size, nationally-distributed magazine edited for African American readers. He also published the American Negro Reference Book covering virtually every aspect of African-American life, present and past.
The artifacts will showcase more than 200 photographs, documents, films, artifacts and memorabilia culled from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (Schomburg), the John P. Davis on-line Collection, the family ‘s personal holdings and from archives at his alma maters, Bates College and Harvard University Law School. |
